Robert Castillo is an interdisciplinary artist from the northland of Kansas City. A formally trained jazz bassist and composer, he creates visual art informed by his compositions for contemporary jazz ensembles, solo piano, and full orchestra. As a first-generation United Statesian, Castillo’s global perspective defies simple categorization. His oil-glazed portraits depict profound narratives, often focusing on loved ones, while his vibrant geometric works merge childlike splendor with refined sophistication. Embracing his Mayan heritage, he modernizes post-classic imagery to preserve this lineage. Venturing into stone sculpture, he carves intricate 3D works that reflect his intuitive creativity. Despite lacking formal visual art education, Castillo honors the past while exploring new artistic territories. Currently in the final stages of completing his first novel, a science fiction exploration of artificial intelligence’s long-term implications, he remains fueled by boundless creative possibilities and potential, hoping his eclectic body of work inspires others to discover and embrace their inherent creativity.
